The rounding problem

Naive split of 100.00 by 3

33.33 + 33.33 + 33.33

= 99.99. A cent has vanished.

Largest-remainder split

33.34 + 33.33 + 33.33

= 100.00 exactly. Nobody is more than one cent from their true share.

Splitting fairly

When “divide by four” is the wrong answer

The calculator below handles the arithmetic; our guide on how to split bills fairly covers the harder part, choosing which method actually fits your situation.

  • Someone did not drink. Use shares rather than an even split: two people on 2 and one on 1 gives the third exactly half of what the others pay.
  • One person paid the whole bill. That person is owed the difference between what they paid and what they consumed. Money you covered for other people is lent, not spent, and treating it as spending overstates your own outgoings for the month.
  • People paid in different currencies. Convert the total once and then split it; never split first and convert each share, which leaves the parts a fraction adrift of the total.
  • Net zero is not settled. If you owe Ana 50 and Ravi owes you 50, the group nets to nothing while two people are still out of pocket. Settlement has to be judged pair by pair.

You paid the whole bill

Left your account

You actually spent

34.50

103.50 is lent, not spent. Only the 34.50 belongs in your spending totals.

How NetWorth+ handles this

This calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, stored, or logged; reload the page and it is gone. It is provided for general information only and is not financial, tax or investment advice. Results are estimates: real lenders apply fees, rounding and day-count conventions that vary by product and country. Always check figures against your own statements or your lender before acting on them.
